Why a Mesh Pool Cover Is an Indispensable Accessory

If you’re looking for safety pool covers, you have two basic options: solid safety covers, and mesh safety covers (and possibly some hybrids). As a general rule, though, your options boil down to these two.

Now, there are plenty of reasons that a solid pool safety cover offers value, ranging from inhibiting algae to economizing consumption of pool chemicals – but that doesn’t mean mesh pool covers are without their own virtues.

This short list will break down some of the advantages of mesh covers.

Maintenance Considerations: No Cover Pump Needed

Solid pool covers require a special extra piece of equipment known as a cover pump, the purpose of which is to remove standing water from the top of the cover. This adds an expense, both in terms of the device itself and in energy consumption. The design of mesh pool covers eliminates the need for these pumps (more on that below).

Energy Savings

While mesh pool covers are not as effective at mitigating temperature changes as solid pool covers, they can both help keep a pool warm or cool, depending.

In hot water, mesh pool covers block much (though not all) of the sun’s light, helping to keep the pool cooler. On the flipside, they help slow thermal transfer in the cooler months, saving you money on pool heating costs.

Durability

Believe it or not, mesh pool covers actually take the edge here, although it might seem as though the opposite would be true.

This is primarily because mesh pool covers allow rain and snow to pass through, and the design also helps prevent ice from accumulating in the winter months.

As a result, mesh pool covers tend to last longer than solid pool covers when properly cared for. And, on top of that, like solid pool covers, they also block a great deal of leaves and debris from entering the pool (although not all of it).

They’re Easier to Handle Than Solid Pool Covers

Mesh pool covers usually weigh substantially less than solid pool covers, and you might even find that some take up less space. This makes it easier to handle and store mesh pool covers than their solid alternatives.

They Also Boost Safety

This is not necessarily an advantage of mesh pool covers, but it is important to note that they, like solid pool covers, also improve safety by helping to prevent children, pets, and bystanders from falling in.

Cost Efficiency

Mesh pool covers are often much more affordable than solid pool covers, making them ideal for pool owners on a budget.
