Why LED Grow Lights Are Your Best Option

Indoor growers are faced with lots of questions and options. The size of your tent, whether you should use fabric or plastic pots, and what sorts of fertilizer you should use (and when) should all be dictated by what you’re growing.

One thing most growers will benefit from, though, are LED grow lights, which are better than pretty much all other alternatives, including incandescent, fluorescent, and specialty grow lights, like HPS grow lights.

Here are all of the main benefits and advantages of LED lights, enumerated.

Longevity

On this alone, LED grow lights blow all other alternatives out of the water, and by a wide margin. LED lights last tens of thousands of hours; it’s not unheard of for an LED light to last 50,000 or more. By contrast, incandescent lights only last a few hundred to a thousand; even fluorescent lights, which are considered pretty long-lasting, usually only last 5,000 to 15,000 hours or so.

Power

LED lights have come a long way and there are now options that offer you plenty of wattage to meet the demands of your plants, even those that would require full-sun planting if they were grown outdoors.

Energy Efficiency

LED lights may be a little more expensive up front, but they’re also enormously more energy efficient than all other types of grow lights, which can save you in the long run. LEDs can also operate on low voltage, which means you can run a lot of them without stressing your home’s electrical system or overdrawing.

Versatility

There are modern LED grow lights that emit a wide range of spectrums, from full-spectrum lights to red lights and everything in between, so you can customize the wavelength to what the plant needs based on its current stage of growth.

Durability

LEDs are solid-state lights, also known as SSLs, which are very unlike conventional lights because they do not possess a glass bulb. As a result, they are shatter resistant; some are even effectively shatter proof.

LED Grow Lights Can Be Directional

Directional LED lights can concentrate the light emitted where it’s needed, which makes them more efficient and wastes less output. This can also be a benefit when you’re growing in the confines of a grow tent and the directional light is necessary.

Better Temperature Regulation

LED lights produce very little heat compared to other conventional options in grow lights, which can make it much easier for indoor growers to precisely regulate the temperatures at which their plants are maintained.

Easier Disposal

Some grow lights, such as fluorescent and HPS grow lights, contain toxic compounds which require them to be disposed according to certain applicable regulations. LED lights contain no toxic compounds and can be disposed of in regular household waste containers and in some cases can even be recycled at the end of their lifespans.

Space Savings

LED lights can be very small, which can be a big bonus when space is limited inside your grow tent.

Safety

Because LEDs produce much less heat than alternatives like HPS and incandescent grow lights, they produce a lower fire risk and are safer overall.
